VEDANTHANGAL BIRD SANCTUARY OPEN TO PUBLIC DURING PONGAL HOLIDAYS 2021 பொங்கல் விடுமுறையின் போது வேடந்தாங்கல் சரணாலயம் திறந்திருக்கும்

Great news! During this year's (2021) Pongal holidays, the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary will be open to public after nearly a ten-month closure due to Covid-19

ORIENTAL PRATINCOLES AT KORATTUR LAKE

On 13th October 2019 myself, Swarna and Subramaniam made the observation of about more than 300 Oriental Pratincoles (Glareola maldivarum) on the Korattur Lake's western edge; earlier on the 7th of October 2019, I had seen them when I did the bird count with SRM School Nature Club members, Hemanth and Nowfal. Before these, I have not seen these birds in our locality.

There is an on-going research about OPs with satellite tagging them; one of the sat tagged bird Leg Flag SEP (PTT 83593) , which was seen breeding near Bengaluru at a place called Almatti Dam backwaters in Bagalkot district (ebird obs by Subbu Subramanya -- https://ebird.org/view/checklist/S56341712), was last updated in September 2019 to be located near Chennai (https://wingthreads.com/oriental-pratincole-update-17/); the research update site tells that the current location of the birds is not known. I hope that the birds that have visited our Korattur Lake are the ones that migrated alongwith the sat tagged SEP

BLYTH'S REED WARBLERS HAVE GONE

It's nearly been a month now that we have seen Blyth's Reed Warblers last in our neighbourhood (outskirts of Chennai). ebird data BRW 2019 May to May shows a return trend now as well. Are the BRWs that come to our neighbourhood the ones that breed in Quetta (as noted in Salim Ali & Dillon Ripley) or from any other location?

ASIAN PIED STARLING WITH CHICKS SEEN AT KORATTUR NEAR CHENNAI

Today 10-06-2018 (Sun.) at around noon, we (myself and my daughter SWARNA RAVISANKAR) saw the same Asian Pied Starling (Gracupica contra) pair feeding their young ones. There were five of them. Both the parents were very busy -- going down a few meters away in the water hyacinth and picking up some worms and back to feeding them. This happened incessantly for the half hour we were observing them.
Place of observation: Balaji Nagar, Korattur near Chennai

ASIAN PIED STARLING BREEDS IN KORATTUR NEAR CHENNAI

Today (9th June 2018 -- Sat.), we (Ambattur -- SRM SCHOOL NATURE CLUB members) and Mr. Ilango of Korattur documented a pair of Asian Pied Starlings in their nest at Balaji Nagar, about 2 km East of Korattur lake. It is learnt that they were breeding in this place (and its neighbourhood) since two years.

FLAMINGOS AT KORATTUR LAKE

            Today [14.10.16 -- Fri.] we chanced upon the sighting of a bunch of flamingos at Korattur lake. As it was nearly dark [around 6 pm], we could not ascertain whether they were Greater or Lesser. But there were, big and small (possibly young) ones. They could be seen from the tiled bund;

They were there for a few more minutes before flying off finally. This is the first time, I have seen the flamingos at Korattur lake. Great.

Note: On 16.10.16 (Sun.), we went to the Karukku side of the Korattur Lake and could get a clear view of them; the flamingos are GREATER ones; they settled down at around 6:45 am and there were nearly 30 of them. Could these be the ones taking the Eastern Route to Sri Lanka?

FLAMINGOES AT PALLIKARANAI MARSH

Been to the Pallikaranai Marsh after almost a year on 15.03.15 (Sun.). Could identify very few wetland birds, though there were many. Prominent among them were the Greater Flamingoes. My daughter said she spotted very few Lesser Flamingoes as well. They were indeed a great sight.

NO BIRDS IN VEDANTHANGAL - KARIKILI WAS BETTER

On 14th Jan. 2015, we (about 25 school students and five of us) went to VEDANTHANGAL BIRD SANCTUARY.

We were in for quite a shock; the tank was without any of the usuals - the only birds to be found were: Pond Heron, a few species of Egrets, Night Heron, Spot-billed Duck, Red-watttled Lapwing, Grey Heron, Little and Great Cormorants, Darter -- that too in single-digit numbers.
Reason: Lack of rains [Also read this HINDU article POOR MONSOON KEEPS THE BIRDS AWAY]; there was very little water in the tank. The locals said that the birds do come but upon seeing that there is very little water, they just fly away. We saw a group of Grey Pelicans and Painted Storks circling above as we were returning: they went away without getting down. The locals said that the people in the village have started planting Groundnut as there was no water from the tank to their fields.

We then went to KARIKILI BIRD SANCTUARY - [KARIKILI BIRD SANCTUARY - WIKIMAPIA] - a few kms from Vedanthangal; there is no entry fee, no crowd and quite some water when compared to Vedanthangal. There were also some birds: Northern Pintails, Northern Shovellers, Common Teals were the ones that attracted our attention. Overall, Karikili experience was way better than Vedanthangal.

So All! Don't miss KARIKILI BIRD SANCTUARY, if you are visiting Vedanthangal.
